WRU Elite Development process boosts international age grade sides

Justin Burnell also named his Wales U19 squad for the season which includes thirteen 17 and 18-year-olds who are playing regular semi-professional Principality Premiership rugby in Wales.

The new Wales U20 side will play its first match on Wednesday January 17th – against the Welsh Clubs XV at Caerphilly RFC – in preparation for the Six Nations tournament, which will be contested by U20 squads from all of the home nations.

The WRU was at the heart of this change in the international age group, which was made possible, according to WRU Elite Performance Manager Mostyn Richards, by the improved development structure in Wales.

“The elite development process in Wales is now producing players who are fitter, stronger, faster and generally better prepared for professional rugby at an earlier age,” said Richards.

“Our job is to produce players who can enhance our Regions and our national side.

“We have pushed for the change in emphasis from U21 to U20 international rugby because it means we can provide our Regions with better players, which will increase the competitiveness of places within those sides and within the national squad.

“Perfect examples are the likes of James Hook and Alun Wyn Jones who, through Wales U21 and international Sevens rugby, have become better players for their Regions and Wales. It is hugely encouraging to see so many 17 to 19-year-olds playing Premiership and Regional rugby.

“There is no doubt these players have helped to increase the intensity and competitiveness of the Principality Premiership. Ebbw Vale are top of the Premiership having lost three games and drawn two, which shows that anyone can beat anyone else in the League now which is a very healthy situation.”

Dai Rees added, “We are pleased with the strength in the current squad, many of whom were part of the U19 Grand Slam squad last year. Four players have already gained experience on the senior international Sevens circuit this season, and more of these players could earn Sevens call-ups this season.

“A core of these players could still go on to represent Wales at the IRB U21 World Championships in 2008 which is fantastic in terms of their development pathway.”

WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis said, “It’s fantastic that the WRU is leading the way in terms of our development structure.

“The Principality Premiership is living up to its status as the breeding ground for the development of our elite young players. Our Regions are starting to see the great benefits of the academy and competition structure, with the quality of the players coming through ready to step up and represent them at senior level.”
