Wales Sides Slump In Heineken Cup

It was a miserable opening weekend of Heineken Cup rugby for Wales regional sides. Not one of the four representative regions were able to record a victory in Europe’s toughest rugby competition.

Llanelli Scarlets opened up the weekend with a match against Toulouse, and were kicking themselves after the losing a match coach Gareth Jenkins said they should have won. Neither side managed a try in appalling conditions.

The Blues pushed Ulster hard at Ravenhill – at one stage in the second half the beleaguered capital side led the 1999 European champions. However they were eventually hauled back, and lost 21-16. David Humphreys was the chief assassin, notching all the points with five penalties and two devastating dropped goals.

The Neath Swansea Ospreys travelled to France filled with confidence having won seven straight Celtic League games. But they found the step up to Heineken Cup rugby a bridge too far, and lost out 38-17 to Catsres.
