The 19-year-old Ackerman captained Wales U20 into the Six Nations U20 tournament this season before picking up a serious leg injury against France at the Arms Park. He made his club debut in the EPCR Challenge Cup fixture against Oyonnax in December and first start in the New Year’s Day league victory over Scarlets.

The Dragons Academy graduate followed fellow centre and Wales U20 cap Westwood in agreeing new terms at Dragons.

“The ceiling is so high for Harri. He has a fantastic career ahead of him so the news that he wants to do that as a Dragon is a huge boost for us all,” said Flanagan.

“Harri is another big man in our midfield and a real ball playing centre who makes so much happen around him. He will compete with the likes of Aneurin Owen and Steff Hughes for the 12 jersey going forward and we’re excited to see him return to the field following his successful rehabilitation.

“Both Harri and Joe are Gwent boys who want to be successful at our club. Contracting both in the long-term is a huge boost for our midfield options going forward.”

The 20-year-old – who made his club debut in the European clash against the Sharks in January and has made four senior appearances – has put pen to paper on a multi-year contract at Rodney Parade.

Westwood is only a year older than Ackerman and has already showcased his versatility operating on the wing and at centre. The powerful Caerphilly-born midfielder – who stands at over 6ft 3in and weighs over 100kg – has been earmarked by boss Flanagan as one of the club’s long-term midfield options.

“It’s great news that Joe has signed a long-term deal with us as we firmly see him as a future 13 for our club,” said Flanagan.

“He is a big man and great athlete; built to be a modern-day rugby player, and he has a fantastic skillset from his time playing in multiple positions in junior rugby.

“Joe is an exciting prospect for this club, and we look forward to seeing how he develops and pushes on in the coming seasons.
