Dragons have announced flying wing Ashton Hewitt has signed a new deal to remain with the region until at least 2021.

The winger, who made his debut in an LV Cup match against Scarlets back in 2013, has gone on to make over 70 appearances for the Rodney Parade side.

The 24-year-old has proven himself as a prolific try-scorer with 21 tries in his 72 appearances in a Dragons shirt. And head coach Ceri Jones can’t wait to see him get back to his best after a season dogged by injury.

He said: “We are delighted that Ashton has signed a new contract with us – it will be like having a new signing next season.

“Ashton has been extremely unfortunate with injury over the last 12 months, but he has worked extremely hard and diligently with his rehabilitation and we will see him back to his best next season.”

Hewitt is the fourth player to have penned a new deal in recent weeks, alongside Adam Warren, Lewis Evans and Matthew Screech.

Jones added: “He is a player who can create opportunities out of nothing and is a clinical finisher. Ashton is also a leader for us both on and off the field, who has the respect of the entire dressing room.

“Ashton is a fantastic example of hone-grown Gwent talent who has come through our system and who wants to bring success to our region.

“He is excited about the future at Dragons and we’re excited to see him back in action next season.”

Hewitt underwent shoulder surgery in November, which ruled him out of the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign.

The speedster has twice been a member of Wales training squads – in the 2017 Six Nations and 2018 Summer Tour of Argentina – however he was forced to pull out of both camps with concussion and the aforementioned shoulder injury respectively.
