Pembrokeshire’s school children will be emulating their British & Irish Lions heroes at an iconic West Wales beauty spot this weekend, at an event organised by WRU and National Trust on Broad Haven South beach.

More than 150 children representing 17 schools from, Whitland to Milford Haven, will take part in a festival of rugby on one of Wales’ award-winning beaches in two days’ time (Friday) before the event opens to families on Saturday 10 June, from 11am – 3pm, in the region of the 2017 PRO 12 Champions.

The free events, suitable for all ages and abilities, aim to get children to try tag rugby while encouraging families to enjoy Wales’ beautiful coast and countryside with activities such as den building, campfire cooking and wild art run by the National Trust Stackpole team.

With no advanced booking required, anyone can get inspired by the Lions, captained by neighbouring Carmarthen-born Scarlets and Wales hooker Ken Owens against the Blues today, following their Maori welcome at the awe-inspiring Waitangi Treaty Grounds earlier this week.

“Wales is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world,” said Ryan Jones, WRU’s Head of Participation. “We’re excited to be working in partnership with the National Trust to take rugby to the stunning setting of Broad Haven South where players, old and new, can just turn up and give it a go.

“We’ve got more than 150 boys and girls from primary schools kicking off events on the Friday and we’re working closely with National Trust to pull out all the stops make this and the family fun day on Saturday 10 June a great occasion whatever your age and interests. You can play rugby, cheer from a deck chair, build a den and get creative with the National Trust team, and in doing one or all of these things, you’re guaranteed a great day out.”

The family-friendly beach rugby event will be the first of its kind endorsed by the WRU as Welsh Rugby continues to develop links with other Welsh organisations to grow the game – part of its vision to engage more people, more often with more enjoyment and more success in rugby.
