Team manager Alun Charles hailed Alltwen’s “massive effort” as they lifted the Division Three East Central C title.

Needing just a win at home to bottom club Brackla to lift the title, Alltwen turned on the style to run in 15 tries for a 95-8 victory. Stalwarts Ceiron Daniel and Andrew Roberts both hit hat-tricks while Rhodri Lewis was at the double. Paul James, Kyle Roberts, Alex Carne, Andrew Thomas, Gareth Ireland and Jordan Hopkins added further tries with skipper Daniel Madge also going over.

Roberts kicked five conversions while Jason Richards hit four and Ross Jones added a tenth to round off a stunning victory and claim the league title. They ended their season with a “disappointing” 13-12 loss at Ogmore Vale – despite beating them 60-0 less than a fortnight earlier – but that didn’t ruin Charles’ mood.

“It’s been a tough season,” he said. “We had a loss to Ogmore Vale, which was disappointing, but we won the championship with two losses.

“It’s been a massive effort through the whole team, coaches, management, committee and the supporters, who really got behind the village and it’s reaped benefits.”

Alltwen opened the season with three victories before losing to eventual runners-up Cefn Cribbwr in October. But they got their revenge with a 16-11 success at home in February before pipping them to the title by two points.

“It was a two-horse race really and the vital win was at home to Cefn Cribbwr, we turned the tables then and we’ve got a habit of winning these days,” he added.

“It’s fantastic for the club because we’re a small village in the Swansea Valley and it’s about time we had recognition that we are a good outfit.”
