Newport Gwent Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones reckons a win over Glasgow Warriors can be the perfect remedy for their poor start to the season.

The Men of Gwent have won just once this campaign after they were beaten 27-11 at Benetton Treviso on Friday night. And it does not get any easier for the Rodney Parade region as they prepare to face Glasgow Warriors this weekend.

But Jones reckons they could kickstart their season with a win over the 2014 Guinness PRO12 champions.

He said: “We’re used to picking ourselves off the floor and going again, it’s just what we have to do, we have to look forward. I fully believed we could come to Treviso and get a result but basic errors compounded each other and allowed them to dominate.

“But I believe we can go back home and get a result against Glasgow. If I don’t believe it then I may as well give up. We haven’t got that confidence to put teams away at the moment, but if we could send a statement of intent against Glasgow, then it could all turn around.”

The Men of Gwent paid the price for a slow start as tries from Tommaso Benvenuti, Marco Lazzaroni and Marco Fuser sent them crashing to their third defeat in four games. Rynard Landman hit back before half-time, but 12 points from the boot of Tomasso Allen kept the Italians at arm’s length.

Wales wing Hallam Amos captained the side for the first time in northern Italy. And Jones reckons he can lead the Dragons to future glories.

He said: “Hallam was brilliant as skipper today, he got all the boys together in the changing rooms and spoke really well. He led from the front and you can tell he commands the respect of the group. He’s a young man with an old head on his shoulders and I’m sure he will lead the region again.”
