The new Group Chief Executive of the Welsh Rugby Union who takes over from November has been welcomed at the Annual General Meeting of the body which took place today(SUN) at the Vale Resort near Cardiff.

Martyn Phillips takes up the role when Roger Lewis steps down after nine years at the helm of the game in Wales.

At the AGM attended by delegates from member clubs around Wales messages of good luck were led by WRU Chairman, Gareth Davies and departing GCEO Roger Lewis.

The AGM also heard thanks to Roger Lewis for his contribution to the game during his nine year tenure.

Details of the record financial performance for the last year were given to the AGM by Group Finance Director Steve Phillips.

The AGM is the biggest formal gathering of member clubs each year with each invited to send two delegates to the event.

The WRU Chairman, Gareth Davies, said: “We are working towards a clear vision of the future and that vision does involve empowering the community game.

“There will be difficulties along the way but we will try to face them and resolve them together. We are all part of the same Union. We can work together to sustain and develop Welsh rugby as the national sport of Wales.”

The Chairman and the President of the WRU praised the departing GCEO, Roger Lewis,for his contribution to the game in Wales over the past nine years.
