OBITUARY: Trevor Lloyd

The oldest living British & irish Lion, Trevor Lloyd, captain of the Maesteg ‘Invincible’ team and Wales and British Lion scrum half, has died aged 91.

He was born in Taibach, near Port Talbot, on September 5, 1924.

He took advantage of the injury to Rex Willis against Scotland to partner Cliff Morgan to victories over Ireland at Swansea and France in Paris in 1953.

He secured selection for the British & Irish Lions team to tour South Africa in 1955, where at 30 he was the oldest player in the tour party. Also in 1955 he led a Wales XV against a Lions XV and skippered Maesteg five times from 1948 to 1951 and also in seasons 1953-54 and 1955-56.

A blast furnaceman who served in the Navy during WWar2 he remained extremely loyal to Maesteg.

From Eastern School in Taibach, he also made appearances for British Steel Co, Aberavon, Cwmavon and Bristol, ending his career at Aberavon Quins.
