Roberts hails Ospreys’ togetherness

Scrum-half Martin Roberts reckons Ospreylian pride saw the region battle past Connacht on Friday night.

Steve Tandy’s men were without 18 senior stars at the Liberty Stadium but their young-guns fired in the second-half to steer the side to a 26-11 victory.

They are still unbeaten at the top of the Guinness PRO12, and Roberts said pride in the black jersey saw them home.

He said: “It’s an outstanding effort really. Credit has to go to Steve and the coaches, they’ve identified, recruited and developed guys who want to play for the Ospreys shirt and I think you could see that.

“The young lads put their hands up, the boys coming off the bench were up for it and I think that was a big reason that we were able to kick on and pick up what was, in the end, a pretty decent win.”

The former Wales number nine returned to the region after a spell across the Severn Bridge with Northampton and Bath.

Only 10 members of the squad remain from Roberts’ first spell in Swansea, and the 28-year-old is delighted to have come back to such a close-knit group.

He said: “I’m absolutely loving it. It’s nice to come back into a group that is so together. It’s a young group but I feel that I can add my experience to hopefully make a difference. I’ve been fortunate enough to play for two top sides in land, Northampton and Bath, so I’ve experienced different environments since I was last here and hopefully that means I can give a different perspective.

“We found the first half a bit tough. We played ourselves into some good areas but didn’t take advantage for whatever reason and couldn’t get onto the scoreboard. We had a few things highlighted to us at half time and we learned our lessons quickly, came out for the second half and scored an early try which put us in good stead.

“It’s pleasing to get the win. Connacht are always a tough side, so it’s nice to be able to get back to winning ways straight away after last weekend.”
