Neath look for double over Quins

Neath coach Pat Horgan is looking forward to Friday’s match away to Carmarthen Quins as his side look to secure two wins in a row in what has been a tough season so far.

The Blacks celebrated their first double of the season last Friday after winning away at Swansea and Horgan knew a win was vital following three consecutive defeats.

“I wasn’t worried about the double,” he said.

“Just getting a win was important for morale and to get the points on the board. It wasn’t pretty at times but we put in a lot of endeavour and commitment and we created a lot to build on.

“When you get into a losing streak it’s sometimes hard to get out of it. We’ve enjoyed six or seven years or more of good winning streaks and teams expect a tough game from us. It was a really important game for us last week.”

This Friday Neath have the chance of another double. When Carmarthen travelled to The Gnoll in September, Neath were 15-12 winners in a tight game and Horgan expects the same again.

“It will be a tougher game this Friday,” he said. “We haven’t got a very good record down there so we need to back up last Friday’s win with a good performance again. Hopefully we’ll sneak another win to help us climb up the table.

“We are still struggling with injuries. We lost our number eight, Rhys Williams last Friday – he’s going to be out for about four weeks. And I’ve been told that Emyr Williams, who didn’t play last week, is out for a good three or four months after having surgery on his shoulder.

“Euros Evans is still out with an ankle injury. Lee Williams, our second row, has had surgery on his knee and he’s out for another four weeks so we’re pretty depleted but plugging away. We’ll be permitting in one or two players for Friday night and hopefully we’ll get some boys back just before Christmas to push us on a bit.”

Horgan was particularly impressed at the support his side are getting on their travels and hopes for the same again in Carmarthen this Friday.

“We had good support last Friday,” he said. “Easily the same numbers as Swansea, probably a little bit more. It’s great to see and we need that support and we need fans to be patient with our players.

“As long as the players are showing the commitment and endeavour that they’re doing at the moment, the fans will appreciate it and hopefully they’ll see the same again this Friday in Carmarthen.

“We need to improve our set pieces, especially line-outs so we can build our attacks. Then we can get a better run in each game. Do that and we can get a good winning run together.”
