Blues upbeat ahead of another huge test

Cardiff Blues face one of the toughest tests of their season this weekend but Phil Davies insists they will head to Dublin in good spirits as they prepare to face European Champions Leinster in their own backyard.

The Irish province have won three of the last four Heineken Cups and saw off the Scarlets in Llanelli last weekend so a trip to the RDS is definitely a daunting prospect.

But while the Blues have endured a poor run of results in recent weeks and face an uphill struggle to qualify for a European quarter-final, Davies has at least two good reasons to be cheerful ahead of Saturday night’s PRO12 encounter.

DFP – Leaderboard

First there’s the boost that comes from having the majority of his Wales contingent fit and ready to fire before they jet off to Spala for a national training camp, and then there’s an improved showing in defeat to Toulon last time out as the Blues refused to be over run by the big-spending French outfit.

“All our internationals are available for the weekend, apart from Harry Robinson who’ll be going early with Wales on Saturday,” said Davies.

“The (other) international boys will be going to Poland on Sunday morning. We come back from the Leinster match and they head off in the morning.

“I was frustrated and proud of the performance (against Toulon). The reaction we got from everyone was something we’ve wanted for a while.

“In the last few weeks we’ve played the Heineken Cup finalists, the Top 14 leaders and now we have the European Champions.

“The weekend showed that those experiences are helping the players improve.”

Davies knows more improvement will be needed to topple Brian O’Driscoll and co this week, though, as Leinster have long since been renowned as a side with no obvious weakness.

“We’re well aware of the challenge we face,” added Davies.

“Leinster are a pretty multi-faceted team. Their kicking game is well established, they have a solid setpiece and they are able to dictate the game from that.

“We’ve got a big job to do at the breakdown. We have to be on top in that area…and we’ll have to work hard in defence.”
