Australia fear autumn backlash

Triumphant Australia coach Robbie Deans fears a backlash from Wales when the two sides meet next in Cardiff during the Dove Men Series of Welsh home internationals.

Deans believes New Zealand will also have to face a Wales team ready to make up for the narrow loss of the summer series in Australia.

During the autumn Wales will face Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and Argentina in a mouth watering series of home internationals.

The Welsh team were so close to snatching victory in their test series that Deans believes they will be ‘lying in wait’ for revenge back home.

“Wales are a world class side. They have a capacity to play, they have an ability to keep going for the full 80 minutes and they have threats all across the park,” he said after guiding the Wallabies to a clean sweep in Sydney.

“By the time we get over there at the end of the year they will be refreshed and lying in wait not only for us, but also the All Blacks. I think they have a good opportunity there.”

Deans admitted that that the final Test could have gone either way before his side scraped home with a slender  20-19 victory.

He said: “Both teams were capable of winning that game and credit to my blokes for showing some composure in critical moments at the end.”

There were only 11 points splitting the two teams in the three-Test series, but it ended as a 3-0 whitewash in favour of Australia after their triumph in Sydney.

Deans added: “My guys showed great discipline because there was a lot happening off the ball and they didn’t react.

Wales will face Australia in the final international of their four match autumn series of games at the Millennium Stadium later this year.

Wales kick off the Dove Men Series against Argentina on November 10, before taking on Samoa on Friday November 16th, the World Cup champions New Zealand on November 24 and then Australia on December 1.
