Confidence had taken a dent after a bruising encounter away to Gwernyfed With just a week to recover from that trip Lampeter pulled out all the stops in this end to end encounter with Welshpool, who were willing to run the ball on every occasion.
From the start Welshpool played with real intent with some excellent passing leading to their first try within two minutes of the start by centre Rhian Davies.
Lampeter looked shell shocked but refused to panic after some reassuring words from captain Shirley Jones urging the bulkier Lampeter pack to suck in defenders before earning the right to spin the ball wide.
This resulted in an excellent response from the home backline spreading the ball neatly out to wing Dawn Ling who after making 20 metres neatly flicked the ball inside for impressive centre Bee Sawyers to glide in under the posts.
Welshpool immediately struck back with their dangerous backs running hard through some weak Lampeter defence to score their second try through flanker Zoe Astley.
This fired Lampeter’s backs to believe in themselves in taking on the larger Welshpool backline with Kelly Davies sprinting through would be tacklers on the way to the line.
Welshpool refused to back down, coming at Lampeter again through their strong running backs, resulting in yet another well deserved try for second row Kayla Williams.
From here on in Lampeter were determined to not concede another score by keeping the play tight amongst the forwards leading to a five metre charge by Angharad Watkins knocking aside all before her on the way over the try line.
The heavier Lampeter pack began dominating their opponents along with supporting any backline move that broke down, hooker Mandy Griffiths barging her way over in the corner.
Patiently Lampeter went through the phases and then span it quickly to full back Jen Jones who hit a delightful angle to score in front of a packed clubhouse end.
Welshpool to their credit refused to lie down, capitalising on a lapse in Lampeter concentration for lively scrum half Carolanne Butler to score, infuriating coach Brinley Smydde on the sidelines.
Lampeter however had the final word with centre Sawyers kick and chase resulting in a neat pick up and score for the victorious Maroon centre.
The game saw a league debut for no less than eight Lampeter players with a warm welcome extended to any new or old players with an interest in the sport.
Lampeter will savour their victory but they know that harder games await, starting with Barry LRFC in two weeks.
