Bedwas celebrate victory

Bedwas took the Worthington’s Newport and District Cup by virtue of a 2-0 try-count in a 15-15 stalemate in what was a very exciting final played at Whiteheads, Bassaleg.

The match ran for 48 minutes in the first half and 52 in the second and in the long second spell of time added on for injuries, Cwmbran fly half Chris Llewellyn twice was not far short with massive penalty attempts.

Indeed, there was nothing to choose between the two sides and many believed there would be extra time played, but a try in either half gave the cup to Bedwas skipper and centre Gareth Petit, who had limped off after 39 minutes.

Two splendid Llewellyn penalties put Cwmbran ahead, but smart passing by Ronald Hearn and Darren Gibbs saw prop Dafydd Lewis cross and Kevin McCole kicked a touchline conversion.

However, Llewellyn potted a third penalty for an interval 9-7 lead, before Bedwas wing David Bennett raced 40 metres at top speed for a try, only for Llewellyn to level with his fourth penalty.

Full back Johnny Morgan, who had moved into the centre, then landed a Bedwas penalty, but referee Mark Goodger awarded a penalty that Llewellyn struck to even it again.

The man of the match was Bedwas scrum half Tom Dunn, though his opposite number Dan Powell ran him close.

Scorers:
Bedwas
Tries: Dafydd Lewis, David Bennett; Con: Kevin McCole; Pen: Johnny Morgan.
Cwmbran Pens: Chris Llewellyn 5.
