Jones backs Davies to make impact

Wales’s key play maker Stephen Jones is hoping Scarlets team mate Jonathan Davies can make a big impact against Argentina this afternoon at the Millennium Stadium in the Invesco Perpetual Series.

Davies is already attempting to shake off comparisons with Scott Gibbs but comparisons with the former Swansea, Wales and British Lions great are inevitable when the midfielder brings the same strong running and tackling skills to the table.

“Obviously the Argentine midfield is strong, but we’ve got certain plays where we want to use the back-line to compliment each other – and Jon fits into that really well,” said Jones.

“He’s been good for us at the Scarlets. Physically he’s very explosive and very quick. I’m comfortable playing with Jon because I understand what he wants defensively and how we can complement each other.

“He’s a great player with a good attitude. He works very hard and I’m delighted for him to win his first full cap on Welsh soil. He’s looking forward to the match in a big way and he’s very excited.

“He’s a good thinker and he understands the game well. He’s got a good nature on him and he’s pretty focused. He doesn’t get flustered, in fact I haven’t seem him flustered.”

Jones is also hoping Wales can cut loose against the Pumas and cross the whitewash – something they’ve only managed once in the current autumn campaign.

“Obviously the law changes have led to a lot more ping-pong or aerial tennis ,” explained Jones.
“A lot of teams kick now and it’s about being smart with your choice of kick and obviously your chase is just as important as your kick.

“We want to play rugby, we want to throw the ball around, we want to play hi-tempo rugby. Look at the selection, look at the wingers we’ve got and Hooky [James Hook] at full-back.

“We want to give the ball to those guys. That’s the way we want to play, but we do realise kicking is an important part of the game. When we played against New Zealand, they kicked 20% more than us. That’s the stats.”
