Pontypridd’s love affair with the SWALEC Cup continued after demolishing Premiership rivals Pontypool in the fifth round tie at Sardis Road.

Dai Flanagan was Pontypridd hero of the 2006 cup final when he outshone Neath’s then relatively unknown fly-half James Hook with a later winner.

And the outside-half stepped off the bench again to put the wraps on Pontypridd’s 53-0 victory, converting the last two of his team’s eight tries.

Pontypool have other battles to fight at the foot of the Premiership and this game was effectively over by half-time with

Pontypridd, who have contested three of the last four finals, 27-0 ahead after prop Ryan Harford put them on track early.

Newport have lifted the Welsh cup once in the last 30 years but will feel this could be their year after winning the only other all-Premiership tie against Bridgend.

Tom Riley scored in either half and kicked a further nine points as Newport demolished Bridgend 44-7 at Rodney Parade.
Holders Neath had few problems dispatching Division Two outfit Gilfach Goch 44-3 though first division Whitland were the biggest casualties of the round.

The west Walians went down 26-18 at Division Three south-east leaders Llantwit Fardre following tries from Geraint Welsh and Dominic Masters and 16 points from the boot of Carl Thomas.

Premiership leaders Llanelli ran in nine tries, seven of which converted by Luke Richards, ina comfortable 65-5 victory at Garndiffaith.

Llandovery, cup winners in 2007, navigated their way past a potential banana skin against high-flying Bargoed in Division One, winning 43-14 at the Dairy Field following two tries from wing Ifan Evans.

Glamorgan Wanders also survived a scare against Division One leaders Newbridge before edging 35-14 clear following tries from David Hewlett, Jamie Jones, Scott Andrews and Mick Kelly.

Rumney edged through to the next round with an unconvincing 12-7 win over Tredegar.

Cardiff won 53-15 at Narberth, Cross Keys got the better of second division Builth Wells 43-19 and Ebbw Vale ended Ynysybwl’s cup run 41-17 at Eugene Cross Park. Aberavon beat local rivals Corus 58-19, Swansea won 38-7 at Bridgend Athletic while third division Tondu saw their cup dreams dashed 25-14 by Carmarthen Quins.
