Exodus as Ponty head south

There will be an exodus from Pontypridd to Penzance this coming weekend as the players, back up staff, officials and supporters of Pontypridd RFC form a convoy to the Cornish peninsula.

Ponty will play a pre-season friendly fixture against newly promoted Division Two South side Mounts Bay RFC – the game taking place at the club’s Penzance ground on Saturday, August 9. (kick off 3.00pm)

An extended squad will make the trip with Pontypridd, as club coaches Paul John and Dale McIntosh cast an eye over their players and trialists, in the build up to the season proper.

A number of Ponty players will miss the Cornish tour for various reasons. Centres Mike Davies and Adam Thomas, along with utility back Matt Hutchings are away on domestic leave, whilst Blues Academy pair, hooker Rhys Williams and prop Sam Hobbs will also not travel. Late fitness tests on recent injury victims – prop Owen Cotton (knee), hooker Leighton Davies (calf), lock Ryan Savage (hamstring) and wingers Curtis Cunningham (foot) and Owen Williams (rib) – will be required before the Ponty squad is finalised.

A fleet of Pontypridd supporters will make the trip down to Penzance, with three hotels booked in the town for the Friday and Saturday nights. This will signify the largest cross-border movement of Ponty fans since the club’s European adventures back in the days of top class professional rugby.
