THANKS A MILLION!

Millennium Stadium general manager Paul Sergeant last night offered a million pound thank you to everyone involved in making Tsunami Relief Cardiff a roaring success.

“We have hit our target to raise at least a million pounds for the stricken families in south east Asia. But it wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing help and support we have received,” he said. “An incredible team worked round-the-clock to put the event together in only three weeks. I’m proud of every one of them and the people of Wales for giving us their backing.

“Everyone, from all the international artists who offered to play for free, to the production teams and countless volunteers, went flat out to make sure that the event was a day to remember as well as a massive fundraiser.

“We had a world class line up for what was a world class event.”

As the last of the 61,000 fans who packed the stadium for seven hours of music made their way home, Sergeant added: “We are glad that we were able provide a focal point for people to come together to express their support for the grieving families and communities in south east Asia and across the world.”

The event would almost certainly have sold out even if tickets had been offered at a higher price but Sergeant explained: “We wanted to it to be an event for all and in reach of everyone’s pocket.”

When the stadium was able to release an extra thousand tickets this week they were snapped up in just twenty minutes. But he said he was delighted that those who could not attend were still able to follow the day on television and radio.

“I’m particularly pleased that we were also able to offer people around the world the chance to share the event via the Internet,” he said. “It gave the world the opportunity to see that Cardiff really cares and wants to do something to help.”
