Byron Hayward marked his senior Wales debut by scoring a hat-trick of tries after coming on as a replacement in the 49-11 win over Zimbabwe in Harare in June, 1998.
His second and final cap came three weeks later from the start in the 96-14 defeat to South Africa. He had previously won Welsh representative honours at Youth, U21, Sevens and A team levels as an outside half. He launched his career at Abertillery and played for a number of other Welsh clubs, as well as playing in England for Gloucester and Sale Sharks.
He also took up boxing during his playing career and was turned by Enzo Calzaghe into a Welsh ABA light middleweight champion. He launched his coaching career while still playing at Ebbw Vale and went on to work with the WRU, coaching at U19 and U20 levels. He had posts at both the Dragons and Sale Sharks and then joined the Scarlets, working alongside Wayne Pivac and Stephen Jones.
