A brace of late tries from Cory Hill and Ross Wardle secured a stunning comeback victory for Newport Gwent Dragons against high-flying Glasgow on Sunday.

The Dragons had a mountain to climb when they trailed 20-10 on the hour but they showed great character to close the gap on the sixth-placed Scarlets with eight regular season games still to play.

Second row Hill and centre Wardle crossed in quick succession to move Lyn Jones’ side 24-23 in front with 10 minutes remaining and they held on for a first league win of the year.

The Dragons trailed 7-0 as early as the third-minute when Jason Tovey saw his clearing kick charged down and Ross Harley pounced for a try that Finn Russell converted but they were celebrating a try of their own when the game hit a quarter of an hour as Andrew Coombs’ superb offload saw Matthew Pewtner put prop Owen Evans over.

Tovey converted to make it 10-10 after he and Russell had exchanged earlier penalties but it was Glasgow who led at the interval thanks to a stunning breakaway score from scrum-half Niko Matawalu. The Fijian raced away from 80 metres and Russell’s conversion handed the visitors a 17-10 advantage as they looked to maintain their 100 per cent away record in the PRO12 this season.

Russell pushed the Warriors’ advantage up to two scores with a second penalty but the Dragons responded brilliantly as they turned the game on its head in the space of four minutes. First, Hill finished off a fine break from impressive scrum half Richie Rees and Wardle then dotted down out wide following a chargedown.

The boot of Russell had struck once more in between the Dragons’ second and final tries but it was the afternoon’s third kicker who proved the hero as Rhys Jones struck a brace of conversions to hand the hosts a lead they hung on to magnificently in the closing stages.
