Advanced Coaching Course 2026/27

There comes a point in every great coach’s journey where the clipboard and cones aren’t enough. Where the desire to improve shifts from simply wanting to win the next game to wanting to master the craft of coaching itself.

You have spent years in the trenches. You’ve felt the high of a last-minute penalty and the isolation of a losing streak. You have drilled the fundamentals, built team cultures, and stood on the touchline in all weathers. You have proven your loyalty to the badge.

Now, it is time to invest in yourself.

Elevate Your Coaching on the WRU Advanced Coaching Course

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is now inviting applications for the prestigious Advanced Coaching Course. This is not a basic accreditation; it is the pinnacle of community coach development in Wales. It is a selective, immersive, and transformational journey designed for the ambitious few who are ready to take their place among the very best in the community game. More Than a Course: A Catalyst for Excellence

In a rugby nation as proud as Wales, we do not settle for mediocrity. Our history demands excellence, and our future depends on it. The Advanced Coaching Course has been meticulously designed to bridge the gap between domestic success and elite-level understanding.

This program is built on three pillars: Connection, Reflection, and Exposure.

Over the duration of the course, you will be brought together with a cohort of like-minded, high-performing coaches for three mandatory, non-negotiable contact days. These are not just days spent sitting in a lecture hall listening to theory. These are dynamic, high-energy gatherings where you will be challenged.

You will gain industry-standard insights from an array of guest speakers, individuals who have operated at the highest echelons of the community game. These are the minds who have navigated community rugby. They will pull back the curtain on topics ranging from the development of yourself, leadership, working with others around you and the development of your craft of coaching.

But the learning does not stop when the presentations end.

A core component of this course is the requirement to devise and execute an Individual Development Plan (IDP). This is your roadmap. It forces you to look in the mirror, identify the gaps in your own coaching armour, and create a tangible strategy to fill them. This isn’t about what the WRU wants you to learn; it’s about what you need to master to reach your potential.

To ensure you stay accountable and on track, you will be assigned a dedicated Mentor for the duration of the course.

This is where the magic happens. Your mentor is not your boss; they are your critical friend. They are an experienced coach developer who will sit in on your sessions, challenge your biases, and provide the wisdom that only decades of experience can offer. They are there to listen, to guide, and to push you further than you thought possible.

Who We Are Looking For?

We are seeking a specific calibre of individual. This course is not for the casual enthusiast. It is for the coach who eats, sleeps, and breathes the game.

We want coaches with a growth mindset.

Are you curious? Are you constantly consuming the game, questioning methodologies, and looking for the 1% improvements.

We want coaches with high emotional intelligence.

The modern game is won in the mind and the heart as much as the physical contest. We are looking for coaches who understand how to build culture, manage difficult conversations, and connect with players as people. You understand that tactics win games, but relationships win championships.

We want coaches with ambition for Welsh rugby.

Whether your goal is to lead a side in the Super Rygbi Cymru, take the reins of a community club, or progress through the pathway with aspirations to be in the professional game, you must have a fire in your belly. We want coaches who see themselves as custodians of the Welsh game—individuals who want to raise the standard for everyone around them.
