Last year’s leading try scorer in Super Rygbi Cymru Ieuan Morris is showing no signs of giving up his title as top dog in the league after another glut of tries against Llandovery at Church Bank last Thursday.
You don’t have to trawl too far back in the archives to see that the Steelman has a habit of bagging hatfuls of tries for fun. In the past he marked his 50th appearance for Ebbw Vale with a four-try performance against Swansea and then added another four try haul in a match against Aberavon.
In the last two rounds of SRC, he took full advantage of the Steelman’s unstoppable rolling maul against the Wizards, snaffling himself another four tries before backing that up last Thursday’s with his hat-trick against the Drovers.
A new name on the try scoring charts is young Cardiff hooker Tom Howe. His hat-trick against Bridgend at Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday put him in the runners-up spot with six tries alongside Aberavon’s Frankie Jones, Newport’s Hunter Ward and RGC’s Sam Williams.
But Morris isn’t a one trick pony. As well as devilishly difficult to remove from the back of a maul, he is proving a tough act when it comes to winning turnovers for the Gwent side’s cause. He has snaffled 15 so far, three more than nearest challenger Ward and four more than Cardiff’s Alfie Prygodzicz.
Morris has also made 55 tackles but is some distance behind Bridgend’s Tom Jevons who has 69 tackles next to his name.
