Cross back in familiar surroundings while RGC players make their mark

Dewi Cross
Cardiff winger Dewi Cross is closing in on Frankie Jones and RGC's Sam Williams

It’s taken five rounds, but Cardiff’s chief try-scoring tormentor Dewi Cross has joined the race as leading try-scorer in Super Rygbi Cymru.

The Cardiff winger has been an ever present in recent years near the top of the try-scoring charts – the place hasn’t looked the same with his name absent in the opening four rounds but a try in Cardiff’s 35-12 win against Carmarthen Quins has seen his name nestled behind Aberavon’s Frankie Jones and RGC’s Sam Williams who lead the way with six.

Cross, who possesses a deadly record in the league, has now accumulated five tries and no doubt fancies his chances of adding to his tally after Cardiff became the only unbeaten side in SRC after brushing aside Quins.

Cross shares the lead in line-breaks, having made nine clear incisions along with Newport’s Fin Baker who are two clear of nearest challenger, Newport’s Brogan Leary.

Billy McBryde’s haul of 20 points in RGC’s shock victory over previously unbeaten Newport has seen him put clear daylight between himself and the following pack as the leading points scorer in SRC.

He has now got 73 points next to his name and also possesses the best success percentage with 88. Newport teenager Will Ford is some distance behind in second place with 44 points with another youngster, Cardiff’s Ben Coomer in third place with 40.

RGC’s stunning victory against Newport caught many by surprise, but the fact the north Walian side has a number of players near the top of a number of categories suggests it was no fluke.

McBryde, Sam Williams, Dafydd Thirsk and Tudur Jones are all figuring prominently after five rounds of action – Carmarthen Quins will no doubt be keeping a watchful eye on them when the two sides clash this weekend.
