Alex Davies is to join Steve Tandy’s coaching team on a full-time basis as a specialist coach for kicking.

Currently an assistant coach with Leicester Tigers, Davies will take up the role with Wales on 1 September.

As part of Steve Tandy’s coaching team, Davies will work closely with attack coach Matt Sherratt. Davies will lead development of the kicking skills philosophy for the senior men’s team and contribute to the development of the Welsh Rugby DNA across the wider pathway. In his role, Davies will also coach players outside of international campaign windows to continue their development and progression.

A former fly half or scrum half, Davies had a playing career spanning 16 years in which he represented clubs including Bath Rugby, Yorkshire Carnegie and London Welsh. He moved into coaching after retiring from playing in June 2020.

Davies was appointed as Leicester Tigers first team skills and kicking coach in 2023. Prior to joining Leicester Tigers, he was with Wasps for three years as well as working with the Red Roses, the Netherlands national team and Rosslyn Park as kicking/attack coach.

Tandy said: “It’s great to have Alex join the coaching team. He’s a very talented coach who will be another asset for us as a group. I can’t wait for him to join us and to help continue shaping our identity as we head into the next phase of the Nations Championship with our three home games this November.”

Speaking about his appointment Davies added: “I’m incredibly proud to be joining Wales as kicking coach, working under Steve Tandy and alongside an outstanding coaching team.

“It’s a huge honour to represent Welsh rugby and an opportunity I’m extremely grateful for. There’s an exciting journey ahead for Welsh rugby and I can’t wait to get started and be a part of it.”

WRU Director of Rugby and Elite Performance Dave Reddin said: “We’re delighted to add Alex to the full-time Wales coaching team. He impressed in a highly competitive interview process and I know he will add real value both to Steve’s coaching team as well as the wider the Welsh Rugby DNA”.
