Welsh officials given appointments in Nations Cup and Nations Championship

Welsh referee Craig Evans will be in action at the Nations Cup in July

Craig Evans will have the honour of refereeing the first game played in the World Rugby Nations Cup when the new tournament kicks-off on 4 July.

Evans will be joined by Ben Breakspear, Adam Jones, Aled Griffiths and former WRU referee Dan Jones in officiating at the tournament that involves teams from Chile, Uruguay, USA, Canada, Georgia, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Samoa, Tonga, Hong Kong and Zimbabwe.

Evans will take charge of the game between Uruguay and Georgia in Montevideo on the opening of three weekends of action. On 11 July he moves on to Montevideo to control the game between Chile and Hong Kong China.

On the final weekend he will be the No 1 assistant referee for the game between Chile and Georgia in La Serena.

Ben Breakspear also has two refereeing appointments in the tournament, starting with the Tonga v Zimbabwe in Denver. Adam Jones will be his TMO for that game, a position he will also assume in the first of two games at the same venue on 4 July when the USA take on Portugal.

Breakspear will be back in the middle on 11 July for the game between USA and Spain in Raleigh, North Carolina, while Griffiths is TMO for the game on 18 July between Canada and Zimbabwe in Winnipeg. Dan Jones, now attached to the RFU, has a number of TMO appointments.

In the Nations Championship, Ben Whitehouse will spend the whole of July in New Zealand acting as a TMO. He will be in Christchurch on 4 July when the All Blacks host France, in Wellington a week later when Italy take on New Zealand and finally in Auckland on 18 July for the clash between the All Blacks and Ireland.

The officials for the three Welsh matches have also been announced. Ireland’s Eoghan Cross will be in the middle at Cardiff City Stadium for the game between Fiji and Wales on 4 July, New Zealand’s Paul Williams will be in charge in San Juan when Steve Tandy’s men travel to Argentina and Ireland’s Andrew Brace control the game against the Springboks in Durban on 18 July.
