The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is proud to mark Pride Month by celebrating the inclusive spirit of rugby ahead of the Pride celebrations in Cardiff this weekend.
In collaboration with Cardiff Lions, Swansea Vikings and the Wrecsam Rhinos, the WRU has partnered with three of Wales’ LGBTQ+ inclusive rugby teams to produce a powerful film highlighting what rugby has given their players and communities. The film shines a spotlight on the positive impact the sport has had, creating belonging, confidence and lifelong connections.
Liam Scott, WRU’s Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, said:
“We are incredibly proud to collaborate with Cardiff Lions, Swansea Vikings and Wrecsam Rhinos to share these inspiring stories.
“Rugby has the power to bring people together, to create a sense of belonging and to celebrate individuality. This partnership is a powerful reminder that our game is open to all, and we are committed to ensuring everyone feels welcome on and off the pitch.”
Steven van Hemmen, Film producer adds:
“As a rugby player, filmmaker and proud gay man myself, I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity the WRU has given us. Especially in times where communities are more and more divided, it’s refreshing to work with an organisation that actually listens and collaborate with people from LGBTQ community to have their stories told.”
The WRU stands alongside communities across Wales in celebrating Pride this weekend, reaffirming its commitment to making rugby a safe, inclusive and supportive space for everyone.
