For Larry Weaver, volunteering at Pencoed RFC has never been about recognition, it’s about belonging. But during Volunteers Week 2026, the club stalwart received a surprise he’ll never forget, as Wales international, Sam Costelow presented him with a certificate honouring his unwavering dedication to grassroots rugby.
Larry is a familiar face around the club, contributing tirelessly both on and off the field. From preparing kit and collecting players’ valuables to selling lottery tickets and even raising funds pitchside, his matchdays are long, often running from midday to late evening. Yet for Larry, every moment is worth it.
“It’s not what you give, it’s what you get out of it,” he says. “Once you come along, you’re part of the club. Everybody knows you, and you feel valued.”
That sense of community has been deeply meaningful. Larry recalls an emotional return to the changing room after a period away due to mental health struggles. The welcome he received from players chanting his name and lifting his spirits remains his most treasured memory. “You’ll never know how much you’ve done for me,” he reflects.
His story highlights the power of volunteering not just in keeping clubs running, but in building connection, purpose and support.
WRU Director of Community highlights the wider impact volunteers like Larry have on the game,
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of the grassroots game. Without people like Larry giving their time, energy and passion week in, week out, clubs simply wouldn’t be able to operate”.
“They create the environment for players to thrive, they connect communities, and they provide a sense of belonging that goes far beyond the pitch. Their impact is immeasurable, and it’s vital we continue to recognise and celebrate everything they do.”
As Pencoed RFC continues to grow on and off the pitch, Larry’s commitment stands as a shining example of the vital role volunteers play.
❤️ “You’ll never ever know how much you’ve done for me.”
