A lifetime of quiet dedication celebrated at Crymych RFC

Clwb Rygbi Crymych has paid tribute to a true club stalwart, recognising the decades of dedication shown by volunteer groundsman, Peter ‘Pitch’ John, whose tireless work has helped generations enjoy the game.

For over 40 years, Peter has been the unseen force behind the scenes, cutting grass, marking lines, setting posts and ensuring that, come the weekend, everything is ready.

Wales international Josh MacLeod knows that better than most. Returning to his boyhood club, he reflected, “I think I first started here when I was about 7 years of age through to 16. c

“Coming back seeing a lot of the familiar faces that are still around is always pretty special. You don’t realise the amount of work that goes in behind the scenes to keep the place running. So to come back and have the privilege of recognising Peter and his amazing work is pretty special.

He added that volunteers are “massively important to rugby in Wales,” helping players at every level reach their potential.

“You look at the volunteer coaches, the volunteer physios, even down to the catering staff that turn up week in, week out.

“Players like myself, without volunteers, probably wouldn’t be able to reach the levels that we do, whether that’s out here on this pitch that Peter looks after, or whether it’s getting to regional level, international, even the likes of British Lions.

“Volunteers play a massive role in the success of Rugby players and any future generations that are coming through.”

For Peter’s family, the recognition is deeply felt, and whilst Peter may not seek the spotlight, his legacy is written into every blade of grass.
