RGC targeting top six finish after big SRC win over Wizards

Sam Jones was a try scorer for RGC

RGC are now within striking distance of the top six in Super Rygbi Cymru after a five-star 39-12 home victory over Aberavon.

A first half try from wing Sam Jones, along with a conversion and two penalties from Billy McBryde, saw RGC holding a narrow 13-12 advantage at the interval.

Keillen Cullen and Scott Delnevo scored for Aberavon, with Cullen converting the latter’s try.
But the second half was all RGC.

Sam Jones, again, lock Harper Chamberlain, centre Delwyn Jones and replacement Louis Williams added their names to the scoresheet after the break. McBryde converted three of them.
Finishing in sixth spot would secure a side a place in the quarter finals and avoid a play-off eliminator.

The win moves Jon Callard’s side, in seventh, to within four points of sixth placed Carmarthen Quins ahead of their showdown in Colwyn Bay on Saturday.

“We’re starting to make Stadiwm Eirias into a fortress and turning it into a difficult place for teams to come,” said RGC scrum half Connor Dever.

“With the support behind us, we’re moving in the right direction at a crucial stage of the season.
Now it’s about backing it up at home to Carmarthen and carrying that momentum into the remaining games – we shouldn’t fear anyone and, with the playoffs on the horizon, it’s all about hitting form at the right time.”

Meanwhile, having been very much in the hunt for a top four spot all season, the trip to RGC is a crucial one for Carmarthen Quins as they look to stay in the top six.

They led 15-7 at the break against Swansea, but a dominant second half display secured a 24-18 victory for the Whites at Carmarthen Park. Wing Brandon Wood dotted down in each half with Wales U20 full back Lewis Edwards also on the scoresheet after the break.

Josh Phillips kicked nine points, while both Quins tries were scored in the first half, by wing Thomas Williams and scrum half Aron Hemmings. Steff Jac Jones converted Williams’ try having earlier opened the scoring with a penalty.

A late penalty goal from replacement Aled Thomas earned the Quins a losing bonus point, but it’s now three without a win in the league for the west Walians. The win for Swansea boosted their hopes of breaking into the top four, with the Whites five points back on fourth placed Newport.

Second placed Cardiff thumped bottom side Pontypool 52-20 to cut Ebbw Vale’s lead to nine points with three rounds of regular fixtures remaining. The Blue & Blacks ran in eight tries on their way to a sixth straight league win.

Full back Matty Young, captain Craig Hudd and replacement prop Ioan Emanuel all helped themselves to two tries. Scrum-half Ethan Lloyd and centre Osian Darwin-Lewis also scored. Harri Wilde converted six of them.

“I thought the boys were outstanding,” said Cardiff head coach Dan Fish. “To come away to Pontypool, score 52 points and leave with a big six points is massive, especially this time of the season.”

For Pooler, wing Rhys Cole, full-back Carrick McDonough and outside half Harri Ford all scored tries but could not prevent a 10th straight league defeat. Ford also kicked a penalty while replacement Kieran Meek converted McDonough’s try.

The top four after 18 rounds will earn home advantage in the play-off quarter-finals, while the top two will also be at home in the semis if they make it. The sides in fifth and sixth will be away in the last eight.

Llandovery, in third, put an end to a run of three consecutive league losses as they won 26-18 at Bridgend. First half tries from centre Adam Warren and prop Jamie Hughes, both converted by Ioan Hughes, helped the Drovers open up a 14-3 half time lead.

Full back Kian Abraham and wing Harri Doel also touched down after the break to secure Euros Evans’ men a bonus point. Ioan Hughes converted Doel’s try.

But, although leading 26-8 at one stage, they were denied an additional bonus point courtesy of two unconverted Bridgend tries scored either side of the hour mark by Edd Howley and then Ryan Wilkins.

Mccauley Rowley also scored for the Ravens in the second half after Ben Burnell had kicked a penalty right on half time.
