BENETTON RUGBY 31 – 19 OSPREYS
Ross Moriarty was sent off as the Ospreys suffered a five tries to three defeat in Treviso that severely dented their hopes of reaching the play-offs in the BKT United Rugby Championship.
The former Wales back row man picked up a yellow card in the 51st minute and was then shown a second, which was upgraded to a red, shortly after returning in the 64th minute. At that stage the visitors were trailing 24-12.
His second offence, for a dangerous clear out at a ruck, also led to a try by Jack Walsh being chalked off. The Ospreys are now six points adrift of the play-off places ahead of their tough trip to Connacht in Round 14.
Better news for head coach Mark Jones was the return to action of his skipper Jac Morgan after his shoulder injury. He came on in the 47th minute and immediately picked up a trademark turn over in what was only his second appearance for the region this season.
Centre Keiran Williams scored tries in both halves and scrum half Liam Davies picked up a third late on in the game. Benetton scored five tries through Siua Maile, Ignacio Mendy, Onisi Ratave (2) and Jacob Umaga.
The Italians also had two tries ruled out by the TMO in the first half and when Williams touched down for his second try two minutes into the second half it brought the score back to 14-12 with so much to play for.
They then failed to rather the re-start and the home side’s Fijian wing Onisi Ratave was able to barge his way over in the corner. His second effort in the opposite corner bagged the bonus-point.
Benetton picked up two yellow cards of their own when lock Scott Scrafton went to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-on and centre Malakai Fekitoa for a high tackle, but they were able to stand firm and deny the Ospreys anything from the game as they moved to within a point of the Welsh region.
