Quins pile on agony for champions Newport with last gasp win in SRC

Newport head coach Ty Morris certainly didn’t mince his words in the aftermath of his side’s dramatic 28-26 defeat at Carmarthen Quins in Super Rygbi Cymru.

Elis Price’s touchline conversion to wing Tom Williams’ try deep into added time in west Wales sent the champions slumping to a fifth defeat in five outings this season.

Just moments earlier, Newport right wing Iestyn Galton had scored a fourth and what had looked like match-winning try to complete a memorable comeback for the Black & Ambers, who had fought back from 14-0 and 21-7 down to lead in the dying moments.

However, they would ultimately have to settle for two bonus-points, and this latest defeat leaves Newport rooted to the bottom of the table. Next up is the Gwent derby with undefeated leaders Ebbw Vale in a re-run of last season’s final.

“We’re clearly disappointed with another loss. To dominate so many areas of the game and still come away with nothing is tough to take,” admitted Morris.

“As always, we’ll review the match closely and focus on the areas within our control as we prepare for Ebbw Vale. It’s another big challenge against the best side in the league, and we’ll be ready to test ourselves again.”

Prop Rhys Fawcett, centre Gabe McDonald and replacement hooker Issac Young were Quins’ other scorers, all converted by Wales U18 cap and Llandovery College captain Carwyn Leggatt-Jones.

Left wing Morgan Williams, full-back Carwyn Penny and lock Josh Skinner were also on the scoresheet for Newport, all converted by Jac Lloyd but who, crucially, was unable to land the extras to Galton’s try.

Swansea, meanwhile, won 38-31 at RGC to make it three straight victories. First half tries from No 8 Jacob Hopkins, prop Cameron Jones and wing Iwan Glynn helped put the Whites 21-10 to the good by the break, with Josh Phillips converting all three.

Hooker Jac Petch-Jones scored RGC’s first half try, converted by Billy McBryde who also sent over a penalty. Former RGC hooker Rhodri King secured the visitors’ bonus-point straight after the re-start.

Flanker Callum Bowden also scored for the visitors in the second half. Phillips converted both and kicked a penalty. Osian Burt, Caio Parry and Delwyn Jones were RGC’s second half scorers, all converted by McBryde, to ensure they took two bonus points.

Cardiff put back-to-back defeats behind them, returning to winning ways by seeing off Aberavon 45-26 at the Arms Park to bag six points. The Blue & Blacks had the first of their two bonus points in the bag by break, leading 26-19 having edged the first half four tries to three.

Hooker Alun Rees, left wing Dewi Cross, lock Tom Cottle and full-back Matty Young scored for Cardiff in the first half. Lloyd Lucas converted three of them.

Scrum-half Scott Whitlock, wing Cori Lewis-Jenkins and No 8 Ashton Evans hit back for Aberavon. Keillen Cullen converted two. The hosts scored three more in the second half, courtesy of wing Joe Goodchild, replacement prop Joe Cowell and Wales U20 centre Osian Darwin-Lewis. with Lucas adding a further two conversions.

Aberavon would not leave empty handed, with full-back Scott Delnevo scoring their fourth try to secure a bonus point, Cullen converting.

Pontypool gave Bridgend six of the best as they ran out convincing 43-10 victors at Pontypool Park. After Kieran Meek had kicked Pooler into a third minute lead, Bridgend then briefly had their noses in front when scrum-half Chris Williams scored a try moments later that went unconverted.

By the break, though, the visitors trailed 22-5 with scrum-half Morgan Lloyd, No 8 Ieuan Jones and wing Rhys Cole all scoring tries. Meek added two conversions to put Pooler 22-5 ahead.

Wales U20 hooker Evan Wood secured Pooler the first bonus point, before Pat Lewis added a fifth try. Both were converted by Meek. Cole would go on to grab his second try, with Lloyd adding the extras, as Pooler secured maximum points.

Hooker Tyler Olding scored a second Bridgend try, reward for their pressure but, ultimately, the Ravens were left to rue costly errors and missed opportunities.
