Swansea fly half Josh Phillips is the first player to crack a half century of points in Super Rygbi Cymru after five rounds of action.
The former Wales U20 pivot has been a steadying influence for Swansea since arriving from Pontypridd prior to last season’s kick-off. Not only does he possess a booming boot out of hand, his goal-kicking kept Swansea in contests last season without much reward but this campaign is a different story.
Swansea have risen to third in the points table with Phillips accurate goal-kicking proving a major factor. In the last round, he converted all five tries scored against RGC in north Wales and added a penalty for a personal haul of 13 points to jump ahead of Llandovery’s Ioan Hughes at the heat of the points scoring queue.
His course management and deadly boot ensured Swansea headed back home with a 38-31 win having to withstand a late onslaught from the home side in what was a thrilling encounter.
But Swansea’s early success hasn’t been built just around one man. Wales Under 20 full back Lewis Edwards has strung together a number of eye-cataching performances. Tall for a full-back, he has made his physical presence count this season with his off-loading ability to the fore which suits Swansea’s quick-tempo game perfectly.
One of the youngest players in the league, he has made more off-loads (11) and beaten more defenders (19) than any other player in Super Rygbi Cymru this season.
He got his first taste of SRC while still a teenager but enjoyed the experience none the less.
“Obviously it is a big step up physically but I enjoyed last season and now we’re looking to kick on this season,” said Edwards.
“I really enjoyed it last season, going to places like Pontypool and Ebbw Vale are different types of games to somewhere like Llandovery who play a similar game to us, chucking the ball about.”
Edwards has experience of playing centre, wing and fullback for his club and country in the past two years but is now aiming to make the number 15 shirt his own.
“I’ve been chucked around a bit haven’t I,” he jests before adding, “In the last year or so I have settled at full back and I’m loving player there at the moment with Swansea. We like to throw the ball about and I’ve had a bit of ball so that has been good.
“We’re taking nothing for granted – we had a tough season last year so it’s great to get a few wins on the board but there’s still a long way to go,” he said.
