The celtic rivals both wanted desperately to earn bragging rights as both sides have been put in to hibernation for the foreseeable future as England, Scotland and Wales will form a Great Britain side on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Scotland were leading 21-19 and doggedly hanging on in the dying seconds as Wales rattled them with a series of attacks. Callum Carson thought he had won the match for Richie Pugh’s side but he was tackled early which meant the chance went begging. However the defender was given a yellow card for his misdemeanour and Wales scented an opportunity.

With an extra man, Wales kept their composure and spread the ball wide to Iestyn Rees, who despite stumbling, regained his composure and powered over by the corner flag to give Wales a deserved victory.

Ewan Rosser, whose speed was a threat throughout the tournament paid tribute to his side who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with an emphatic flourish after a slow start against the Scots.

“We want to start well every game – but I’m just proud of the boys, really,” he said after his side snatched the dramatic 24-19 victory.

“We said this was our last game together, our last game for Wales, so we just had to leave everything out there. It wasn’t one of our better starts, but that just shows our spirit. We fought to the end.

“It means everything to play for Wales – playing for the badge but also playing for the boys. We’ve had a full year together now, and we’ve built really good relationships, we all want to fight for each other – it just means everything.”
