Wales take on the world champions at Loftus Versfeld in what is one of the biggest challenges in rugby. There may have been many ups and downs during the Six Nations but Pivac believes there is plenty of reasons to be confident.

“There was some good stuff that came out of that Six Nations let’s not forget that,” said the Wales head coach. “What we need to do from a team perspective is focus on the good stuff we put out there, build on it, and make sure we have that on a regular basis over 80 minutes week in week out.

“That’s the challenge for us. We do know how well we can play when we put it together.

“We’ve got to make sure we do that from the first minute to the 80th to stand a chance in these test matches. It’s something we are talking about.

“Not only do we have to be prepared physically but mentally as well. The right mindset to be able to stick it to task for the full 80 minutes is going to be a big challenge.”

South Africa have a reputation as being arguably the most physical side in world rugby, while they are also known for the set-piece prowess. Pivac agrees Wales will have to front up to the Springboks but the former Scarlets coach also pinpointed the kicking game as being crucial to the outcome of the first test.

“I think in the past Wales have had a very good kicking game,” he said. “I think they’ve had a very good defensive game, and have been able to negate some of the strengths South Africa bring.

“Certainly in those areas of the game you’ve got to be good under the hight ball, there’s going to be a lot of kicking, a lot of clatter, and you’ve got to fight for everything in those areas of the game as well.

“Wales have been good at doing that. Hopefully we’ll continue to be good at that, and that’ll put some pressure on them.”
