Craig Evans and Adam Jones face a busy month ahead

Twickenham is fast becoming a home from home for Welsh referee Craig Evans, who will be back at the home of English rugby for the second time this year when he takes charge of their opening game in the Autumn International Series against Tonga tomorrow.

Evans made his Tier 1 debut in the game between England and Canada in July just before heading off to Japan with Adam Jones to officiate at the Olympic Games sevens tournament. He will be joined by Jones and Ben Whitehouse at Twickenham and will return on 27 November for the game between a Samoa XV and the Barbarians.

Jones will be in the middle for two games this month – Italy A v Uruguay and Russia v Chile – while Whitehouse has stints as a TMO in the men’s matches and two in the women’s internationals.

There are two appointments in the women’s matches for Llantwit Major GP Francesca Martin. The former Cardiff University player will be one of the Assistant Referees for Scotland v Japan and England v USA.

“It is a very busy time for Welsh Referees at the moment,” admitted WRU national referee performance manager, Paul Adams. “Craig Evans has been rewarded for a good performance in his first Test match with three further appointments in the Autumn International series.

“Adam Jones has been selected for his first World Rugby appointment [Russia v Chile] following an outstanding first season refereeing in the Pro 14. He also has 2 AR appointments while Ben Whitehouse, Sean Brickell and Ian Davies have been selected for six TMO appointments between them.  In addition Francesca Martin has been appointed to AR in two Women’s Test matches [Scotland v Japan and England v USA].

In addition to the World Rugby appointments, Welsh referees have been selected to referee in a number of Rugby Europe tournaments.

Ben Breakspear will referee Spain v Russia which is effectively a World Cup qualifying match while Jason Bessant will referee Enisei v Black Lion in the European Super Cup.

On the Sevens front, Breakspear continues his rugby development at the World Series 7’s tournament in Dubai where he will be joined by Amber Stamp and Elgan Williams who both referee in the Open Tournament.  Stamp has also been selected for the Lisbon 10’s and is beginning to make an impact on the Women’s circuit.
