Ex-Cardiff Blues' Macauley Cook now plays for Jersey Reds

Jersey Reds hope to catch Saracens off-colour

The Jersey Reds will be hoping lightening can strike twice when they try to match the opening day win by Cornish Pirates over Saracens in round two of the English Championships this weekend.

The Welsh trio of Rhodri Davies, Luke Scully and Jean-Baptisite Bruzulier all played major roles in the Pirates shock win over the three-time Champions Cup winners last weekend and now the strong Welsh contingent at Jersey will be hoping to cause a similar upset.

Former Cardiff Blues stalwart Macauley Cook will be the most experienced of the Welsh group in the Jersey ranks. Two more former Arms Park men, centre Jack Roberts and Wales 7s cap Tom Williams, are among the back line options, while Rory Bartle and ex-RGC back row man Tim Grey feature among the forwards.

Ex-Wales scrum half Aled Davies will be hoping to correct a few of last week’s problems for Saracens, who are still without their England internationals, while another former RGC and Wales U20 forward, Sam Wainwright, is waiting for his chance to shine. Blues hooker Ethan Lewis could join him in the front row having recently joined for the rest of the season.

Billy McBryde gets his first start for Doncaster Knights when they head to top of the table Ealing Trailfinders. He starts at full back, while ex-Merthyr wing Kyle Evans will be hoping for another try after scoring in the 19-17 home win over Ampthill in round one.

The Knights have Dragons centre Connor Edwards on loan and also have Joe Jones in their front row. On the bench is former Blues academy lock Jack Davies.

Wales U20 and Cardiff Met back rower Aled Ward is retained by Hartpury for their trip to Bedford. The former Met skipper marked his debut last weekend with a try in the big win over Richmond.  Luc Jones, the former Dragons scrum half, is in the Richmond squad who host the Pirates this weekend.

Scarlets have sent three players to head coach Glenn Delaney’s old club, Nottingham, to get some game time. Lock Jac Price started in last weekend’s heavy home defeat to Ealing, while prop Harri O’Connor and hooker Shaun Evans were on the bench.

Nottingham have a free weekend, but their opponents on 2 March, Paul Turner’s Ampthill side, will be in action at Ealing. Scarlets centre Joe Roberts is on loan at the club, while hooker Syd Blackmore, lock Llewellyn Jones and former Cardiff Met second row Jac Arthur are all in the mix.

Scrum half Gavin Williams started last weekend, while Alex Humfrey is another exile in the Ampthill ranks. Former Dragons centre Jarryd Sage is another back line option for Turner, along with ex-Cardiff Met outside half Russ Bennett.
