Booth: Ospreys showing promising signs

Ospreys head coach Toby Booth says his team are showing promising signs as they get ready to start the new Guinness PRO14 season with a trip to Edinburgh on Saturday evening.

The men from the Liberty Stadium warmed up for their visit to the Scottish capital with a morale-boosting friendly win over Welsh regional rivals Scarlets.

Booth rested his Wales stars for that game, but the likes of captain Justin Tipuric, lock Alun Wyn Jones and scrum-half Rhys Webb are set to return for Edinburgh.

“We have taken a staged approach since coming in at the start of July,” said Booth. “We knew we’d have the two remaining PRO14 games and we also played the Scarlets.

“We have an idea of where we are, but you never know until you’re put under the extreme pressure which a league game gives you. The signs have been very encouraging.

“The lads have really dug in and embraced what we want to be doing. We’re working really hard and trying to change a lot of things which are deep rooted.”

On the hit out with the Scarlets, Booth added: “It was an opportunity for us to look at some players and we rested all our international guys.

“The result was something we weren’t particularly worried about, but to win coming off the back of the disappointments of last season was important.

“It gives us a shot of belief into what we’re doing.”

Scottish side Edinburgh reached the PRO14’s semi-finals last season and will be a tough first challenge for the Ospreys, especially given the long distance of travel and with Covid-19 still presenting difficulties.

“There is no easy league game, but it’s an opportunity for us to put a marker and performance down that we can be proud of. That’s what we’ve talked about,” said Booth.

“If we can do that we’ll start to improve. I know Richard Cockerill very well from my time in the English Premiership.

“He’s a very, very good coach and produces very, very good teams.

“He’s had a massive impact at Edinburgh and they’ve become a very competitive force. They were right up there in the final knockings of last season and that’s no surprise to me.

“He did well at Leicester, well at Toulon, and he’s making an impact at Edinburgh.”
