We’ve got huge respect for Italy, says Jones

Stephen Jones has been part of the Wales coaching set-up since the 2019 World Cup.

We’ve got huge respect for Italy, says Jones

Stephen Jones says he has a special group of Wales players to work with, but the attack coach has warned his side not to underestimate Italy in Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations opener.

Jones revealed he has been hugely impressed with the Wales squad as the countdown to the Azzurri clash gathers pace.

New Wales head coach Wayne Pivac, Jones, and their fellow assistants want to develop their game plan and overall approach while still winning Test matches.

The 42-year-old Jones insists Wales must get the balance right between being adventurous and pragmatic.

“The group we have is special,” said the former outside-half.

“We have a lot of leaders and a lot of key decision makers. We are trying to make sure the players are confident in our shapes and structures when they go out on to the park.

“We want them to know their roles and responsibilities and how to deliver them. I want them to be confident on the ball.

“We’ve got a world-class set-up here and from my end, it’s special to work with those guys. We are going to tinker with a few aspects – especially our attacking game.

“How we move the ball is key, but we can’t tip the scales. We must have balance in our game and we have to move the ball on our terms and in the correct areas.”

Wales have only lost twice to Italy in Six Nations history and the Azzurri have never won in Cardiff.
But with new head coach Franco Smith at the helm, Jones is wary of the threat the men in blue will pose this weekend.

“We’ve got a huge amount of respect for Italy,” he said.

“They’ve got a new coach at the helm in Franco and he is a very creative coach. They are a team we respect and we need to ensure we are mentally in the right place for this game.

“It’s an amazing tournament to be a part of both as a player and a coach. I’m looking forward to it immensely. It’s a pleasure to work with this group of players. They are working very hard.

“The effort they put in on the training pitch is superb and we are chomping at the bit.

“We’ve got options which is great and we can’t wait for the game.”
