CELTIC CUP: Lloyd is toast of the Ospreys with last-gasp winner

It ended 3-1 in Round 3 to the Irish provinces over the Welsh regional Celtic Cup sides as a last-gasp try for the Ospreys prevented a clean sweep as they battled back to beat Connacht 27-22 in Athlone.

Replacement hooker Garin Lloyd was the hero as he not only bagged the match winning try, but also guaranteed a bonus point for his side. The Ospreys now sit two points clear at the top of the Welsh regional Pool after three of the six rounds completed.

They will head to Dublin on Friday to meet unbeaten Leinster A in arguably their biggest test to date. The other try scorers against the Eagles were centre Kieran Williams, full back Dewi Cross and back row man Guido Volpi, while Josh Thomas kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Munster A, who beat the Ospreys 52-7 in Swansea the previous weekend, made it three from three to top Pool 1 with a 34-17 win over the Dragons in Cork. The visitors drew first blood through Jacob Botica’s boot, but the home side were ahead 14-10 at the break.

Front five members Fineen Wycherley and Jeremy Loughman crashed over for tries that Ben Healy improved before the Dragons hit back with a Calvin Wellington try that Botica converted to cut the gap to a mere four points.

Munster’s third try from scrum half John Poland came on the hour and Healy added two penalties. The Dragons then lost back row man Lennon Greggains to the sin-bin and while he was off the field Calvin Nash added the bonus-point try.

Greggains made some amends with a try at the death, but it was too little, too late for the Welsh region, who head to Belfast to meet Ulster A this weekend.

Noel Reid kicked Leinster A to a 16-10 victory over the Scarlets in Llanelli as they kept pace with Munster  at the top of the Irish Conference Playing at outside half, the Irish international kicked 11 points to go with a try by centre Conor O’Brien after only four minutes.

Leinster were 10-3 ahead at the break after Morgan Williams had opened the home side’s account with a penalty. Williams saw yellow in the second half for a deliberate knock-on and the lead grew to 13 points when Reid added to more penalties.

Some inspirational running by Wales wing Steff Evans then opened up the Leinster defence and allowed scrum half Declan Smith to cross for a try that Williams improved. That opened things up in the final eight minutes, but the Scarlets were unable to find the score they needed to build on their big win over Ulster A the previous weekend.

Responding to that 45-17 defeat, Ulster A marched on the Arms Park and dug deep to beat Cardiff Blues 7-3. Ulster picked up the only points of an even first half when Aaron Sexton showed a clean pair of heels to the home defence on 20 minutes after picking up a loose ball some 70 metres out. Skipper Michael Lowry converted.

It remained 7-0 to the visitors at the break and their tough tackling, no doubt sharpened during the week after conceding six tries at home to the Scarlets, constantly thwarted the home attackers. Lowry and opposite number Ben Jones, the Wales Under 20 outside half of the past two seasons, missed early penalties, but Jones finally got his side on the board seven minutes into the second half with a 25 metre kick.
