Coach Jonathan Hooper – fresh from overseeing the senior women’s fifth-place finish in Rugby Europe – has named a squad for the first leg of the tournament, which is being held at Edinburgh University this weekend (6th-8th July),

It features Lleucu George, who was the youngest player to feature at the Women’s Rugby World Cup last summer, and Ospreys’ Lauren Smyth will captain the side.

“The squad came together last week for a couple of training sessions and I’m excited to see how they go this weekend,” said Hooper. “A few players were in last year’s squad that medalled at Rugby Europe, the Youth Commonwealth Games and the UK School Games.

“We’ve also got players who’ve featured in the senior squad recently, such as Alex Callender, who played in the World Series in Paris last month, and Niamh Terry, who got game time in Marcoussis last weekend.

“The U18 Sevens has proven to be a valuable pathway that has quickly been of benefit to the senior squad, so this will be a very interesting tournament from that perspective.”

The second leg of the Home Nations U18 Sevens tournament will take place at Birmingham University from 20th-22nd July. The format of the tournament will see a round-robin stage contested on day one – with every nation playing each other –  with semi-finals and finals on day two based on seedings from day one.
