Wales after improvements in Hamilton

Wales Sevens head coach Gareth Williams says he wants to see an improved performance this weekend in Hamilton, with the Commonwealth Games fast approaching.

The sevens draw for the Gold Coast edition of the multi-sport event was announced yesterday. Wales will take on Fiji, Uganda and Sri Lanka in Pool D, and every leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series leading up to the Games will be viewed as a trial for the players. Come April at Robina Stadium, only the top team from each pool will go through to the finals, meaning no room for error.

“The challenge for us as a squad is to deliver consistency to our performance,” said Williams, whose men have been drawn with Fiji, Australia and Spain this weekend. “We demonstrate some excellent examples of execution of skill and decision-making, but follow it up with some fundamental errors from there.

“Attaining that sort of consistency is a form of toughness. We have to meet this head on.”

A bright spot in Sydney was Luke Morgan’s breaking of two Welsh records as he became his country’s top try- and points-scorer on the same weekend, crossing the 100-try threshold.

Yesterday’s Commonwealth announcement has served to sharpen their focus. “Our group being announced makes the whole thing very real,” Williams said. “It’s a group we can get excited about, but it will offer tough rugby.

“There is a lot of World Series rugby to played before then, but knowing the group is very exciting and can help us in our preparation for that tournament.”

Wales face Fiji tonight (23:36 GMT), and (Australia (03:24) and Spain (06:28) tomorrow morning, with matches shown live on Sky Sports. Score updates will also be shown on the official World Rugby Sevens Series website
