Pencoed Phoenix produced a near perfect team performance to cruise to a triumphant 97-0 victory against Gorseinon in the Women’s Division 1 competition.

Phoenix were dominant from the outset with Katie Murphy dictating play, breaking through gaps and drawing players in. Murphy caused all sorts of problems for Gorseinon throughout with her intent.

Within the first few minutes Phoenix were off scoring with Hannah Seward’s first try of the day and new Wales squad member, Rhian Nokes, starting her scoring duties off with the conversion.

Within minutes Seward was off again with another try, helped by Natalie O’Shea. The high balls were difficult to control in very windy, wet conditions but Phoenix continued to chase the ball, catch and make use of it at every opportunity available and punishing Gorseinon for mistakes.

Miss passes from Gorseinon was intercepted by O’Shea but she was bought down on the 22, with Phoenix scrum half Sarah Payne regaining the ball and stopping Gorseinon in their tracks. Emma Jane Smith was next on the scoresheet to score her first try in senior rugby.

Gorseinon’s first threat took them up to Phoenix’s 22 and were given extra 10 for ‘off the ball’ play from Phoenix which the referee was starting to pick up on. Phoenix stole the ball from a scrum and through the hands, Seward scored. This was the theme for the afternoon and  tries came from nearly everywhere on pitch from Leanne Burnell, Lauren Atkins, Nokes, Lisa Hughes and Charlie Mundy.

Although Phoenix picked up a sin bin at the end of first half it did not impact on the game as Gorseinon had no answer for Phoenix.

Hannah Seward and Johanna Pulvirenti were voted ladies of match. The next match for Phoenix is against Sengenydd on Sunday.

All three Phoenix ladies teams played on Sunday which was a first for the club. Pencoed U18s beat Mountain Ash 32-0 with tries scored by Sarah Veysey (2), Rosie Carr, Molly Wooding, Lilly Wooding and Megan Jenkins.

In the other game, Pencoed U15s beat Mountain Ash, 19-10.
