Cymoedd take honours in Blues battle

Coleg Y Cymoedd ran in six tries at the Arms Park to win the ‘Battle of the Blues’ colleges in the Welsh Schools & Colleges league to make it two from two at the start of their campaign with a 45-23 triumph over Cardiff & Vale College.

Having bagged eight tries in their opening round win over Gower College, the former champions overcame an early deficit to run in half-a-dozen tries without replay as they went from 6-3 down to 45-9 ahead in another decisive performance.

It had been 24-24 when most of the players met in the Blues South v Blues North Regional Age Grade Under 18 competition at the same venue, but this time there was no doubting which was the better team. Having conceded two early penalties to Tony Lamerton, Cymoedd eased their way into a 17-9 interval lead thanks to tries from lock Cian Lewis-Hughes and back row man Ioan Davies.

DFP – Leaderboard

Wales U16 cap Lewis-Hughes, younger brother of Cardiff Blues and Wales U20 lock Shane, powered over from close range, while Davies capitalised on a strong shove from his pack at a five metre scrum that forced CAVC No 8 Reuben Williams to pick up on the retreat and then lose the ball.

Right wing George Thomas scored within a minute of the re-start before a volley of three tries in eight minutes took the game completely away from CAVC. Centre Ioan Davies weaved his way through and then Joe Vickers and Will Clapham rounded things off.

There was a late revival from the home side, but tries from Cavel Sinclair and Lamerton were merely consolation scores.

There are two more matches in the Cardiff area on Wednesday, 20 September, when Whitchurch HS host Pembrokeshire Colleges and Ysgol Glantaf seek to build on their opening round win in north Wales when they entertain reigning champions Coleg Sir Gar.

Bridgend College make their first appearance of the season having sat out the first round. They host LLandovery College, who will also be looking for their first win.
