Matthew Jones helped himself to 18 points as reigning champions Pontypool made it four wins in a row with a 55-24 win at Bedlinog.

The former Wales outside half scored one of his side’s eight tries as they stayed clear of the chasing pack at the top of the WRU National Championship. They were 31-10 ahead at the break, but then saw the gap cut to 14 points when the gallant home side ran in two tries.

That was as good as it got for Bedlinog, who were then put to bed with a final burst of three tries from their all powerful visitors. Ethan Davies, Lewis Prothero, Kieran Meek, Rhodri Usher and Ben Parry were all among the Pontypool try scorers.

Narberth warmed-up for their trip to Pontypool Park this weekend with a 22-11 home win over new boys Rhydyfelin. Tries from Ryan Davies , Tom and Powell and Richard Rees put the home side in control and Jonathan Rogers converted two of them and kicked a penalty.

The students of Cardiff Met were only one point ahead at the break, 13-12, on a filthy night at Glynneath, but managed to score the only points of the second half to secure a 21-12 win to rise briefly into second place.

After two early penalties had given the visitors the lead, Harri Morgan crossed for a try that was converted for the home side to edge them 7-6 ahead. Joe Williams then made things even better with a second try even though his side were playing up the slop and into the driving wind and rain.

The atrocious weather played a huge part in proceedings and the students replied with a concerted try just before the break and then extended their lead early in the second with a penalty. Then a second try completed a good away win.

A try double from Cody Baker carried Beddau to a bonus-point victory that moved them up into second place after three wins in their opening four games. Their 29-13 home win over Skewen came despite falling 10-0 behind in the first half.

It was 13-7 to the visitors at the break before three second half tries for the home side earned them all five points. Matthew Howells also crossed for Beddau, who also had a penalty try, and Hywel Chatham kicked a penalty and two conversions.

Trebanos bagged seven tries in their 52-15 home win over Newcastle Emlyn. Centre Tom Dew got two of them and full back Matthew Edwards top scored with 20 points.

Newbridge earned their first win of the season as they picked up a bonus-point in their 27-24 home win over Tata Steel.
