Conbeer given licence to spread wings

Ryan Conbeer has been given a licence to roam as Wales U20 aim for a fifth-place play-off in the World Rugby U20 Championship.

The young Scarlets wing is one of six changes for today’s clash with Scotland at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisis, after sitting out last week’s victory over Samoa.

And Conbeer, who started against both Australia and England, is determined to get involved at every opportunity against the Scots.

He said: “Obviously Samoa was a really good win, we can take a lot of positives out of it – the attack was good at times and moving into the next game we’re working on a few things but we’ve taken a lot from that Samoa game.

“Personally I’m just going to look for the ball and get as many touches as I can. I won’t just be staying on the wing, I will be going looking for it and getting involved. The coaches want to see the wings coming in and getting involved as much as possible.”

Wales have already triumphed over their Scottish counterparts twice this season and  Conbeer believes it is an advantage that they know their rivals so well.

He is acutely aware that nothing can be taken for granted but admits a potential fifth-place finish would be a fine achievement for the current crop.

Conbeer added: “Having the win over them twice gives us a big confidence booster going into this game, we already have footage of them so we know what we need to work on and where we can target them.

“If we beat Scotland, we’ll have the chance to play Australia again or Italy so we will be really pushing for fifth place.

“Last year the boys finished seventh so if we can finish fifth then it will be a really good achievement and show that our hard work has paid off.”
