Wayne Pivac’s men sealed their first silverware since 2004 with a thrilling success over the Irish giants, scoring six tries in an exhilarating display.

Liam Williams, Steffan Evans, Gareth Davies and Tadgh Beirne all crossed before half time, before DTH Van der Merwe and James Davies added second-half scores.

It sparked scenes of joy for the men from Llanelli. Here’s how Pivac’s squad reacted to their final win…

Man of the match and flanker Aaron Shingler:

“It’s unbelievable. It’s just been so enjoyable playing with the Scarlets this season. We have peaked at the right time and saved the best till last.

“We said we wanted to come into this game and play as we have done all season. Just because it was the final, we didn’t want to change anything and we showed what we were all about.

“We played exactly the same way. We threw the ball around, we have great athletes in our team, and we used them. We’re in the moment and for us, it’s just play by play. When you’re in it, you take every moment as it comes. I’m just lost for words. I’m over the moon.”

Captain and No 8 John Barclay:

“We started slowly this year, but we never panicked. We always knew we had a really good group of players here and we’ve stuck to our guns and played that brand of rugby all year. We said all week that if we defend well, we’ll back ourselves to score tries. Some of the guys have hit their form just at the right time.

“This group has been together for a couple of years now. Some guys have come in and added a lot. We’ve matured and play in different ways. We really enjoy defence now.

“I think it’s great for the competition and great for the Scarlets. The support we’ve had this season has been incredible and it was the same again here. We could hear them all game and it was a big boost to us.”

Flanker and try scorer James Davies:

“It means everything to this club and to this bunch of boys. We worked hard for so much of this season and I think it’s really shown in the last couple of games.

“We have peaked at the right time and it’s been great to be a part of. Our front five and set-piece has been outstanding all year. The front five have given us opportunities with the way they carry.”

Head coach Wayne Pivac:

“I’m very, very happy. It was a fantastic performance. We let a try in just before half time, but we stayed composed and our defence held pretty tight.

“They got a few back, but it was special for James to get the last one. We wanted to play the way Llanelli have always played and now we’re the Scarlets, we wanted to get back to somewhere near that rugby.

“The boys enjoy it. It rained, but we decided we wanted to carry on with the way we’ve been playing and we scored some good tries because we back our skills.

“It came off and I’m just so happy for the players. Stephen Jones and Ioan Cunningham came down to New Zealand with me last summer and we caught up with the All Blacks to see what they were doing. We’ve tweaked a few things from our game the year before and it’s paid off.”

Scrum-half Jonathan Evans, who missed his own stag do to play in the final:

“It was a bit of a mix up! We booked the trip about a year in advance. Looking back at the season before, the final didn’t fall this late! But we made the final and this has turned out to be the best stag ever!

“There are 15 of my friends out in Budapest at the moment and I’m sure they’re all having a drink for me.

“It’s amazing. I’ve got a flight at six o’clock in the morning, I’ll join them at 10, and hopefully they’ll have a pint there waiting for me. There was a lot of talk about our slow start to the season, but we’ve regrouped and it’s brilliant. My fiancee was in the crowd and so was my father.

“He was meant to be on the stag, but he’s cancelled it to come and watch me. I think they’re quite happy.”
