Coach’s View: Wellington – Day Two

After bouncing back on Day Two in Wellington with a good win against Papua New Guinea, Wales Sevens were stopped in the Challenge Trophy semi-final by Australia. Head coach Gareth Williams gives his assessment of the day.

“It’s a pity we’ve had to finish the weekend with another disappointing result and display against Australia.

“Overall, we have been able to blood a number of young players with more game time, which is a real positive, but it’s fair to say that some of the displays of more senior players will take close scrutiny in the coming days.

“Accountability can be difficult with such a small squad, and the lack of competition that might sometimes entail, but we’re a tight group and there will be some honest discussions over the next few days.

“It will be great to have Luke Treharne back next week in Sydney: he adds experience and leadership which will help in this week’s preparation for the fourth leg of the competition.

“In Wellington, the results were disappointing and unacceptable at times, but as I’ve often said, the long-term goal of performing at the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2018 is firmly at the forefront of my mind.”

Wales Sevens are currently sixth in the world rankings. Next weekend in Sydney they will compete in Pool B with France, Samoa and Fiji. Find more information on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series here.
