Dragons heap praise on wing star Hewitt

Newport Gwent Dragons boss Kingsley Jones has heaped praise on young Welsh winger Ashton Hewitt.

Hewitt, a Wales Under-20 international, has been an impressive figure for the Rodney Parade outfit this season following a breakthrough campaign last term.

His deceptive power, electric pace and intelligent running lines have seen the 22-year-old catch the eye, wih all those attributes again on show on Boxing Day. Hewitt scored a try as the Dragons were beaten 27-16 by Cardiff Blues in the capital.

“He’s great. He’s still a young man and his injury at the end of last season was untimely for him, but he can finish,” Jones said.

“The composure he shows under pressure is impressive and his two tries at Worcester were some of the best you’ll see. There’s not often you see people scoring tries like that, but that’s what you get with young talents like him.”

Hewitt, alongside Keelan Giles at the Ospreys, is one of a number of young stars coming through the game in Wales.

And Jones, who has coached some of rugby’s best players, says Hewitt reminds him of former England star Jason Robinson who he worked with at Sale.

“Ashton wouldn’t be far off the quickest I’ve coached,” he added. “I coached Jason Robinson and he was ridiculously quick. I’ve said before he reminds me of Jason, not because of the way he plays the game, but it’s his mindset. He’s a total winner. That’s why he reminds me of Jason.”

Wales are blessed with plenty of wing talent with George North, Liam Williams, Leigh Halfpenny and Alex Cuthbert all experienced campaigners.

But the likes of Giles and Hewitt are breathing down their neck, and Jones added: “I remember when Warren (Gatland) came over he talked about proper pace. Ashton has got that and he’s as brave as they come.

“He’s not the finished article yet but the biggest compliment I can give him is how much he improves. He has a big future I think. There are a couple of kids coming through at the same time but he has great talent.”
