Wakley places big demands on GB Royals

It may be his first official tournament as head coach, but Nick Wakley has placed high expectations on his Wales Women Sevens squad who will be playing as GB Royals in this weekend’s Rugby Europe Grand Prix Sevens Series in Malemort, France.

Wakley has taken his Welsh side to invitational events over the summer but this will be the first time he will take charge in an international tournament and he fully realises the challenge that lies ahead as he prepares his side to face Portugal, Ukraine and Russia.

“This is my first hands-on international tournament with Wales so it’s the first time this group of 12 have been together – I’ve got high expectations, I’m not going to lie.

“I think this a strong group and we’ve only got strong people to come back into the squad to push for places so I’m hoping they do themselves proud and I’m hoping to qualify for the Cup – I want to get out of the group which is going to be a tough ask and obviously when we are out of the group it’s all up for grabs and knockout rugby,” he said.

Wakley has selected a strong squad but was unable to select Olympic star Jasmine Joyce as she has played earlier for GB Lions in the previous rounds which ruled her out of contention for the third and final round of the series, while Laurie Harries is still recovering from a long term injury. Mel Clay was a late withdrawal due to a hand injury, to be replaced by Sinead Breeze.

“This event is a great opportunity for Sinead, she has been fantastic in the camps. She had trained really hard. Sinead has out and out gas and she is vying for the wing position with Jess Kavanagh-Williams who has been fantastic over the summer – they are going to have a good battle for that winger’s spot,” said Wakley.

“We’re in a good group. Russia are in a bit of turmoil in terms of their coach so they will be very much an unknown quantity. Portugal will offer a different style of sevens to that of Ukraine so the girls will have to be on their toes to try and enforce our game rather than let the opponents take control.

“There’s a great feeling in the side, everyone is positive, there are a bit of nerves floating around but we just want to get out there now and perform,” added Wakley.

GB Royals squad:
Elinor Snowsill (Captain), Sian Williams, Dyddgu Howell, Rhi Parker, Shona Powell Hughes, Jess Kavanagh-Williams, Elen Evans, Keira Bevan, Gemma Rowland, Sinead Breeze, Hannah Jones, Alisha Butchers

Saturday’s draw:
(France KO times) 12:06 v Portugal
14:51 v Ukraine
15:52 v Russia
